Who’s still paying attention, 50 years later?
OPINION

I am starting this piece by answering a question I often get from my followers on social media. They ask me whether it had crossed my mind that dark July of 1974 and later in August of that same year – when the betrayal of the Athens junta was complete, and under a democratic Greek government – that 50 years would go by and the situation in Cyprus would still be the same. The answer could be a simple “no.”

Fifty years after the Turkish invasion and occupation of Cyprus, the exhibition features photographs by journalist Sotiris Danezis from the 3.5% of the Turkish-occupied ghost town of Famagusta (Ammochostos), which was opened in 2021 by the occupation authorities. The exhibition is held at the Melina Cultural Centre in Thiseio (Iraklidon 66) and entrance is free.

Cyprus deposits decreased

Total deposits in Cyprus last month recorded a net decrease of 44.1 million euros, compared with a net increase of €925.7 million in May, the Central Bank of Cyprus Monetary Financial Institutions (MFIs) Deposits and Loans Statistics for June said, as included in the July 2024 edition of Monetary and Financial Statistics.

Cypriot NPEs remain unchanged

Nonperforming exposures (NPEs) in the Cyprus banking system remained practically unchanged in May, easing slightly to 1.77 billion euros from €1.80 billion the previous month, with the NPE ratio amounting to 7.4% of total loans.
