Sports Digest: Euroleague holds on to Panathinaikos
BASKETBALL: Panathinaikos will remain in the Euroleague despite the clash of its owner, Dimitris Giannakopoulos with the league’s organizers. The Euroleague has included the Greek champion in its plans for the 2018-2019 season and the Greens are now making their plans for it, starting with attempting to clinch a deal with their guard Nick Calathes, three days after clinching their 37th league title.
SOCCER: Asteras Tripolis and Atromitos, will face tricky ties in the second qualifying round of the Europa League. Asteras will face the winner of the tie between Scotland’s Hibernian and NSI Runavik from the Faroe Islands, and Atromitos will play Dinamo Brest from Belarus, whose president is Diego Maradona. The games are scheduled for July 26 and August 2.
BASKETBALL: Olympiakos coach Yiannis Sfairopoulos bid farewell to his players and staff at the Reds as his stint in the Piraeus club is about to end. Reports say Olympiakos has approached Israeli-American coach David Blatt as his replacement.
TRACK & FIELD: This year’s Athens Street Pole Vault event will take place at Syntagma Square on Friday, June 22, at 7 p.m. and involve only women. It will feature Greek superstars Katerina Stefanidi and Nicole Kyriakopoulou, as well as Jarisley Silva, Holly Bradshaw and Robeilys Peinado.
