Olympiakos ‘winter champion’ as AEK stumbles at home

Olympiakos took advantage of AEK’s slip-up at home to finish first at the halfway point of the Super League season and earn the unofficial title of the winter champion.

AEK was held to a goalless draw at home on Saturday by Apollon, whose new manager Giorgos Paraschos managed to organize the visitors’ defense well enough to frustrate the Yellows at the Olympic Stadium.

Less than 24 hours later Olympiakos also felt frustrated against PAS Giannina at home, but it managed to break the deadlock three minutes past the hour mark via Marko Marin and hold on to a precious 1-0 that has taken the Reds to 32 points.

AEK is on 31, along with PAOK that scored a 1-0 win at bottom team Platanias through a Stelios Malezas 56th-minute strike.

Atromitos is one point behind them after downing host Kerkyra 3-1 on Saturday, with Egyptian international Amr Warda netting twice within three minutes.

Panathinaikos remained winless for a sixth consecutive game as it drew 1-1 at Xanthi. Omri Altman gave the Greens a first-half lead but Erik Jendrisek equalized for the Thrace club 11 minutes from time.

In other games Panetolikos held sixth-placed Asteras Tripolis to a 0-0 draw away and Larissa defeated host Lamia 2-0.

On Monday Levadiakos clashes with Panionios, in the last league game of 2017.
