AEK beats PAOK and threatens its lead
AEK will take the Super League play-offs down to the wire seeking to snatch the top spot from PAOK, after beating it 1-0 on Sunday for the second time in two weeks. Panathinaikos defeated Panionios and will likely avoid the last place in the mini-league. Once again both games finished 1-0…
A solo effort by Tasos Bakasetas just before half-time gave AEK a precious home win at the Olympic Stadium of Athens that takes the Yellows within two points of PAOK, provided the Super League disciplinary committee rules in favor of PAOK regarding the abandoned game at Panathinaikos.
Early in the game Lazaros Christodoulopoulos missed a penalty kick. Stelios Malezas received his marching orders for a second bookable offense leaving PAOK with 10 men just before the end.
Earlier at the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium Panathinaikos had Robin Lod to thank for his goal that settled the game with Panionios through a diagonal shot on the 17th minute.
In injury time Vangelis Economou got his second yellow card and Panionios finished the match with a man down.
PAOK is on 11 points, AEK on nine, Panathinaikos on five and Panionios on four.
Wednesday sees the last round of games, with PAOK hosting Panathinaikos and AEK visiting Panionios. If PAOK wins it will join Olympiakos in the Champions League qualifiers, but if it does not and AEK beats Panionios it will be AEK snatching the top spot.
