Sports Digest: Deal signed for new Panathinaikos stadium
SOCCER: The government and Panathinaikos have signed a memorandum of cooperation toward the construction of a new sports complex at Goudi, eastern Athens, to house the soccer club as well as the amateur divisions of the Athens giant such as boxing etc. At the same time Panathinaikos basketball club has asked the government for the leasing of the Olympic Sports hall at Maroussi for the next 49 years.
WATER POLO: Olympiakos finished sixth at the men’s Champions League Final Six going down 8-5 to Brescia on Friday.
SOCCER: The food service store of a second-division referee, Costas Karyofillis was attacked by a mob of 30 hooded men on Friday, injuring the referee and three members of the store’s staff who had to visit the local hospital. The motives of the attack at the store in Peristeri, western Athens, were not immediately known, but reports spoke of possible attack by a set of one of the capital’s top team fans attacking a rival set of supporters.
BASKETBALL: PAOK has parted ways with Soulis Markopoulos, the coach with the most games in the top flight. Ilias Papatheodorou is the favorite to succeed him.
