Sports Digest: Tsitsipas makes Roland Garros proper
TENNIS: Eighteen-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas has successfully negotiated three rounds of qualifying at the French Open and will be at the main draw of the tournament in Paris, for his first ever presence in a Grand Slam tournament. On Thursday the world’s number 202 player defeated Germany’s Oscar Otte 6-3, 6-2.
BASKETBALL: Olympiakos defeated Aris 79-65 in Game 3 of the Basket League semifinal series to win it with a sweep (3-0) and set up another appointment with Panathinaikos, starting on Sunday with Game 1 in Piraeus.
VOLLEYBALL: The men’s national team could do no better than losing 3-0 to The Netherlands in its qualifying group for the World Championship and will fight it out in its two remaining games for the runners-up spot that leads to the play-off group.
WATER POLO: Olympiakos underperformed at the start of the Final Six of the men’s Champions League and bowed out losing to European champion Jug Dubrovnik 11-8 in Budapest on Thursday. Notably it covered a 7-2 half-time deficit to equalize 7-7, but that was not enough. On Friday it will play for the fifth place.
BASKETBALL: A fan at a local amateur league game in Patra was injured by a stone hurled against him during clashes between supporters of local rivals EAP and Panachaiki on Wednesday.
