PAOK and AEK leave it late but win
PAOK has stretched its lead at the top of the Super League’s play-offs mini-table beating Panionios 1-0, while ΑΕΚ kept its hopes for a Champions League spot alive downing demoralized Panathinaikos 1-0 on Sunday.
In a quite dull game PAOK waited till the 74th minute to score its first goal in the play-offs through a magnificent personal effort by Aleksander Prijovic whose left-foot volley beat Panionios keeper Andreas Yianniotis.
Panionios played the last half hour of the game with 10 men due to a second yellow card shown to Masoud Shojaei.
AEK left it even later to score against a depleted and dejected Panathinaikos, having been the best team throughout the game at the Olympic Stadium.
With the game seemingly destined for a goalless draw, Lazaros Christodoulopoulos tried a diagonal bouncing shot from outside the area that found its way into the Panathinaikos net five minutes from time. Christodoulopoulos, a former Panathinaikos player, did not celebrate his goal.
Provided the abandoned Panathinaikos vs PAOK game of last Wednesday is considered a PAOK 3-0 win with three points deducted from Panathinaikos, PAOK is now on eight points, AEK is on six, Panionios on four and Panathinaikos on minus one point.
On Wednesday Panionios hosts PAOK and Panathinaikos entertains AEK.
