Olympiakos loses in water polo’s European cup final
Olympiakos came very close to earning Europe’s crown in water polo, but suffered its only defeat this season to Jug Dubrovnik in the final of the LEN Champions League on Saturday night.
The Reds finished second in the Final Six of the competition in Budapest losing 6-4 in Saturday’s final, after coming from behind to beat Hungary’s Szolnoki in the semifinal on Friday.
Olympiakos was the favorite going into the final, but appeared too nervous on the night and could never snatch the lead from its opponent. Croatia’s Jug owes the title to its goalkeeper, who was voted the most valuable player of the tournament.
Olympiakos, that has completed the domestic double, finished the season with 37 wins, three draws and just one loss in all competitions, the one that cost it the Champions League trophy that it has won once, in 2002.
