PAOK draws at AEK and is one point from finishing top
PAOK snatched a precious draw at AEK on Sunday and needs one point in its last game of the play-offs, at home against Panathinaikos, to earn Greece’s second spot in the Champions League qualifiers. Unlike AEK, that is out, the Greens stayed in the running for the top spot beating Panionios in Mladen Petric’s emotional home farewell, as he is about to retire.
The AEK vs PAOK match at the Olympic Stadium of Athens finished goalless but not without incidents. Both teams had a player sent off and both hit the woodwork once, but in the end it was PAOK that took the result it wanted, as AEK is now unable to snatch the top spot.
Earlier Panathinaikos needed a late Sebastian Leto goal to beat combative Panionios 1-0 at home and maintain its hopes of finishing top, needing to beat PAOK in Thessaloniki on Tuesday.
The match at the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium was the last home game in game in the career of Panathinaikos’s Croatian striker Petric, and his farewell after the final whistle, featuring his son and daughter, was probably the most memorable moment of the weekend.
PAOK has risen to 11 points, Panathinaikos is on 10, AEK has nine and Panionios has one.
On Tuesday PAOK hosts Panathinaikos and Panionios entertains AEK in the last round of the play-offs.
