Petrounias, Vougiouka stake claim for Olympic medals

The gold medal Lefteris Petrounias earned at the artistic gymnastics’ World Cup event in Doha and the bronze that Vasso Vougiouka landed at fencing’s Grand Prix in Seoul eased the disappointment of Greek sports fans from the elimination of the women’s national water polo team from the Rio Olympics, as both Petrounias and Vougiouka stand a good chance of returning from Brazil with Olympic medals this August.

Petrounias performed his rings routine in excellent fashion in Qatar and won another gold medal that makes him the hot favorite for the Olympic gold in Rio.

Vougiouka narrowly missed out on a spot in the final and had to settle for third in sabre in South Korea on Saturday, but showed she is gearing up for a great performance in the 2016 Olympics.
