AEK appoints Poyet as manager
Uruguayan Gustavo Poyet, who had been linked with the vacant managerial post at Aston Villa, has agreed to coach AEK Athens for the remainder of this season, the Greek Super League club announced on Thursday.
A statement by the club confirmed he would sign a contract through to the end of the campaign on Friday.
Poyet, 47, replaces Traianos Dellas, who resigned last week after coaching the team for the last two and a half years.
The job will be Poyet's first in coaching since he left English Premier League side Sunderland last season.
The former Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Zaragoza player has also managed Brighton and Hove Albion.
AEK is currently third in the Greek top flight after eight games, eight points behind leader Olympiakos.
The troubled Athens club was relegated from the Super League to the amateur divisions for the first time in its long history in 2013, but Dellas helped the club win back-to-back promotions to return to the top flight.
