Greeks clinch top spot in Eurobasket group
Greece extended its perfect record in the first stage of the 2015 Eurobasket in Croatia beating Slovenia 83-72 on Wednesday to clinch the top spot in its pool with one game left to play.
With four wins in as many games Greece is already preparing for its first knockout game in the round of 16, to take place on Saturday in France.
The game against Slovenia was reminiscent of that of Tuesday against Georgia, which Greece also won by 11 points in the end. A strong showing in the first half saw the players of Fotis Katsikaris lead by 15 (46-31) at half-time, but a comeback by the Slovenians in the third period took them within two points from the Greeks (62-60) early in the last quarter.
That was when the Greek machine started working again, especially in defense, holding the Slovenians to just 12 points in the last eight minutes of the game.
Vassilis Spanoulis was once again the top scorer for Greece with 19 points.
On Thursday evening Greece plays its last group game against the Netherlands, but this will be a mere formality as it can have no bearing on the classification any more.
