Atlanta’s Giorgos Giakoumakis set for move to Cruz Azul, report says

Atlanta United striker Giorgos Giakoumakis is set to move to Mexico’s Cruz Azul on a $10 million transfer, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano and The Athletic.

The reports indicated that an agreement was reached but the deal was not finalized.

Giakoumakis, 29, is in his second season in Atlanta, having arrived on a $4 million-plus transfer after a two-season stint with Celtic of the Scottish Premiership. He has five goals and two assists through 11 matches (eight starts) for Atlanta United this year after logging 17 goals and three assists in 27 matches (21 starts) in 2023.

He came off the bench on Sunday in a defeat against Charlotte FC and didn’t score for a seventh consecutive appearance. Afterward, he did not speak with the media, per The Athletic and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Giakoumakis played for multiple teams in his native Greece, including AEK Athens, before stints in Poland and the Netherlands prior to joining Celtic.

He has made 22 appearances for the Greek national team, scoring four goals in international play.

Atlanta United (4-8-4, 16 points) sit in 13th place in Major League Soccer’s 15-team Eastern Conference.

Cruz Azul reached the Liga MX Clausura final last month, falling 2-1 on aggregate to Club America. [Reuters]
