Tilos honored for sustainable energy project

Tilos is the first Mediterranean island to become energy-independent, and its efforts to achieve this major goal have been recognized with the first EU Sustainable Energy Award in the Energy Islands category, which was presented in Brussels on June 14.

The program, also named TILOS, is in the final stage of implementation and supplies the energy needs of the island’s 850 permanent residents (as it will the many more who come to the island in the summer months), using new technologies that utilize an 800-kilowatt wind turbine and 200 kW photovoltaic solar panels to produce electricity with a storage capacity of 2.4 megawatt-hours.

Homes and buildings on the island are also equipped with smart meters, which measure electricity consumption and levels. Tilos is not only completely energy-independent as a result of this new system, but it will also export energy for five hours a day to the neighboring island of Kos.

The TILOS sustainable energy project is implemented in coordination with the island municipality and coordinates the Soft Energy Applications & Environmental Protection Lab at the Technological Education Institute of Piraeus, in a consortium with 15 companies from seven different European countries.
