More than 300,000 Danish snack bars sent to Food Bank Greece
Food Bank Greece, a nongovernment organization which fights hunger and food waste, has received a total of 340,000 nut and fruit bars from Denmark’s Rawbite.
“The company first contacted Food Bank Denmark,” said Dimitris Nentas, a representative of FBG in Kryoneri, north of Athens. “But FBD could not absorb such a big quantity,” he said.
After contacting the European Federation of Food Banks (FEBA), Rawbite was advised to send surplus produce to Spain, Portugal and Greece.
Prompted by reports and images of the ongoing refugee crisis, the company decided to send all of the snack bars to Greece.
“We undertook the distribution of the goods, a big chunk of which will be sent to the refugee facilities across Attica region – Elaionas, Schisto and Amygdaleza,” said Nentas. He said that between seven and 10 of the 34 pallets will be sent to northern Greece, where demand for food is high.
A big part of the donation will be absorbed by the various foundations and institutions supported by the Greek NGO – which together help to support about 23,000 people.
“They will go to shelters for underage children or they will be included in food parcels sent to families with children,” Nentas said. It is estimated that each child will get around nine food bars.
Transport costs will be covered by Rawbite.
The snack, which is rich in nutritional value, is available in Greece at health food stores and gyms.
