Event pays homage to Nelson Mandela in Athens
The Greek human rights and anti-apartheid lawyer who was part of the team defending Nelson Mandela at the landmark Rivonia Trial in 1963-64 will be the keynote speaker on Wednesday at an event organized by the Hellenic African Chamber of Commerce in Athens in honor of the late South African statesman.
This is the first event to be held in Greece that pays tribute to his life and work since his death in December.
George Bizos will speak on “A Struggle for Human Dignity and National Conciliation” at the National Hellenic Research Center, and will talk about Mandela’s work.
South African Ambassador to Athens S.R. Makgetla, Justice Minister Haralambos Athanasiou and Chamber President Sotiris Mousouris, formerly of the UN Center Against Apartheid, will also speak.
The event, which begins at 6 p.m., is open to the public and is free of charge, on a first-come first-served basis.
