Greece a magnet for US students
Greece is the ninth most favored destination for US citizens studying abroad, although the numbers are well below pre-pandemic levels.
According to data on international student and researcher mobility collected by the New York-based Institute of International Education, 418 US students spent part or the whole of the 2021-22 academic year in Greece, putting the country behind Italy, Spain (both attracting over 2,000 students), the UK, France, South Korea, Denmark, Costa Rica and Israel and ahead of Germany.
In 2018-19, nearly 6,000 US students studied in Greece – then in 12th place. Conversely, 2,407 Greeks studied in the US in 2021-22 out of a total of 948,519 foreign students.
