Professor George P. Chrousos wins 2023 Transatlantic Alliance Award

Pediatrics professor and medical clinical researcher George P. Chrousos has received the 2023 Transatlantic Alliance Award from the Endocrine Society and the European Society of Endocrinology (ESE), it was announced Friday.

Chrousos is Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics and Endocrinology at National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) School of Medicine. He also is the UNESCO Chair on Adolescent Health Care and the Director of the University Research Institute on Maternal and Child Health and Precision Medicine, both at the NKUA School of Medicine.

Launched in 2021, the award is presented to a recognized international leader who has made significant advancements in endocrine research on both sides of the Atlantic – in Europe and the United States.

Chrousos has focused his research on the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis (HPA axis) and has extensively studied the neuroendocrine alterations associated with a wide spectrum of complex human disorders, including anxiety and depression, eating disorders, obesity, metabolic syndrome, sleep disorders, and inflammatory autoimmune and allergic diseases.

“George Chrousos is an outstanding scientist, a ‘giant in the field’,” said ESE President Professor Martin Reincke, adding that the Greek scientist has authored over 1,000 original scientific papers, while his work has been cited more than 180,000 times.

“His lifetime accomplishments in Greece and Europe perfectly match those in the United States,” he added.

Chrousos will present his award lecture, “The Endocrine Basis and Implications of Stress and Its Management,” at ENDO 2023. The Endocrine Society’s annual meeting will take place from June 15-18 in Chicago. Chrousos also will speak at the 25th European Congress of Endocrinology (ECE) in Istanbul, May 13-16.
