Defense Ministry’s new armament package imminent
Defense Minister Nikos Dendias is preparing to present, within the next few days, a twelve-year defense package designed to strengthen and modernize the country’s defense capabilities.
The plan, based on operational needs identified by armed forces staff, is expected to be presented to the Parliamentary Arms Committee by mid-November for approval.
It will outline programs for immediate, medium-, and long-term implementation of defense systems stretching well into the next decade, with an eye on modern operational landscapes and emerging threats that the Greek armed forces must be prepared to face.
For the Hellenic Army, strengthening anti-aircraft defenses is reportedly the top priority in the new armament package. The Defense Ministry’s political and military leadership has repeatedly emphasized the necessity of protection against drones, ballistic missiles, and other modern threats.
The Hellenic Navy’s primary program will be the acquisition of a fourth FDI frigate and the enhancement of the second, third, and fourth frigates with strategic strike capabilities through the integration of Scalp Naval missiles.
For the Air Force, the primary focus will be advancing to a 5th-generation fighter fleet, beginning with the acquisition of twenty F-35 aircraft to establish an initial fighter squadron, with an option to purchase twenty additional aircraft by the middle of the next decade.
