Greek content, Turkish ire
Athens and Nicosia have expressed satisfaction over Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides’ recent visit to Washington and his meeting with US President Joe Biden.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who welcomed Christodoulides to Athens on Thursday, emphasized that the visit underscores a significant elevation in the Eastern Mediterranean strategic partnership with the US, highlighting Washington’s recognition of the key roles Greece and Cyprus play in regional stability.
Christodoulides described the US-Cypriot alignment as “an acknowledgment of Cyprus’ strategic importance,” reinforcing a unified front in the ongoing pursuit of a UN-mediated resolution to the Cyprus issue.
Τhe meeting elicited a reaction in Turkey, with members of the opposition deriding the Turkish government over what was described as a diplomatic setback.
Moreover, Turkey has expressed frustration at the European Commission’s latest annual progress report, which critiques Ankara’s position and actions regarding the Cyprus issue.
Turkey’s Foreign Ministry denounced the report, calling it reflective of “maximalist Greek and Greek Cypriot views.”
Ankara claims the report overlooks Turkey’s security concerns and misrepresents its regional stance, arguing that the EU “lacks authority” to determine Mediterranean boundaries.
