Androulakis and Doukas react to PASOK leadership election results

Incumbent PASOK president Nikos Androulakis and the Mayor of Athens Haris Doukas reacted to the results of the socialist party’s leadership election late Sunday, which concluded with them set to face off in a runoff vote next Sunday.

In his remarks, Androulakis conveyed his confidence that the party would emerge more united and stronger as a result of the two-round contest.

“Today is a great day for the democratic movement,” Androulakis said. “I want to thank the hundreds of thousands of citizens who honored us with their participation, filling us with hope and strength. I want to thank my fellow candidates for running a campaign characterized by genuine political civility, integrity, and seriousness. I also want to thank, from the bottom of my heart, those who honored me with today’s (Sunday’s) victory. With seven days remaining until the next Sunday, I am confident that PASOK will emerge more united, stronger, and prouder than ever.”

Doukas, who narrowly beat MP and former minister Pavlos Yeroulanos for second place, described the election outcome as a clear call for leadership change.

“The message from the ballot box is clear: 70% are calling for a change in leadership. So, I invite all of you to join me next Sunday as we make a significant leap forward. Let’s change PASOK to change the country.”

“Today is a great day for PASOK, and it is a great day for the democratic movement,” he continued. “I want to thank, from the bottom of my heart, the 300,000 friends and members who came out, voted, and supported the process. I want to thank my fellow candidates who traveled across Greece to strengthen PASOK and the democratic movement in every corner [of the country]. I also want to thank the volunteers who put in immense effort to ensure everything ran smoothly throughout the day, and of course, the people who supported me and helped me advance to the runoff.”
