PASOK leadership elections underway across Greece

Voting for the new leader of opposition party PASOK began at 7 am Sunday across 950 polling stations in Greece.

Polls close at 7 pm, though voting may be extended if turnout is high, especially in Athens and Thessaloniki.

According to SKAI, 18,000 citizens had cast their votes by 9 am, with turnout up 31% compared to the same time during the 2021 election.

PASOK members and new voters over 16 can participate by registering at polling stations, paying a 3 euro fee and presenting ID.

Six candidates are running, including incumbent leader Nikos Androulakis, former minister Pavlos Geroulanos, former EU commissioner Anna Diamantopoulou, Athens Mayor Haris Doukas, lawyer Nadia Giannakopoulou, and dentist and politician Michalis Katrinis.

A candidate needs more than 50% of the vote to win outright. If not, the top two will face a runoff on October 13. Results are expected after 9 pm.
