Kasselakis faces setback as SYRIZA congress postponed

In what is seen as a setback for former SYRIZA chief Stefanos Kasselakis, the congress of the main left-wing opposition party, initially scheduled for November 1-3, has been postponed to November 8-10. The decision was made during an extraordinary meeting of the party’s political secretariat on Saturday.

With this change, the deadline for member registration is now set for October 25, while the election of congress delegates will take place on November 2-3. Previously, the delegate elections were planned for October 19-20.

Under the revised timeline, candidates for party leadership will be nominated before the delegate elections. This adjustment impacts Kasselakis’ plans, as he has yet to decide whether to formally announce a bid for party leadership or attempt to overturn his dismissal last month by the central committee through a no-confidence vote. Notably, the congress holds the authority to reverse that decision.

If Kasselakis does not submit his candidacy by October 24, he risks exclusion from the leadership race if he is unable to secure control of the congress. The original dates would have given him time to gauge whether he could secure a majority at the congress before deciding to enter the race.

The new timeline also extends the period for delegate elections, though it remains uncertain who stands to benefit most from this extension.
