Mayor of Athens Doukas hints at candidacy for PASOK leadership

Mayor of Athens Haris Doukas hinted that he plans to run for the leadership of the Socialist PASOK party in a social media post on Thursday.

In a Facebook post Doukas stated that PASOK can defeat the ruling New Democracy party, just as he did in the mayoral election in Athens, while repeating the phrase “let’s go.”

“We unite forces to defeat ND, as we did in Athens. We dare for PASOK, for our country. Tomorrow is too late. Let’s go now,” stated Doukas, who had already called for a party leadership election in November, in a letter to PASOK’s central committee on Tuesday.

His statement came as a response to an earlier social media post by MP Manolis Christodoulakis, a prominent Doukas supporter for PASOK’s leadership.

Christodoulakis, after highlighting the need for PASOK to mobilize a wider segment of society, openly called for a change within the party and ended his statement with the phrase “Haris, shall we go?”

“We need a brave, bold change. For the movement, for the country! Haris, shall we go?” stated Christodoulakis.

PASOK came third in the June European Election with 12.8% of the vote, a result many in the party found underwhelming. This has led to many party members openly challenging current president Androulakis’ suitability for the role.
