Mitsotakis optimistic about EU top jobs deal

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated that three political “families” have agreed to propose Ursula von der Leyen for President of the European Commission, António Costa for President of the European Council, and Kaja Kallas for the position of High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs, upon his arrival at the European Council leaders summit in Brussels on Thursday.

Mitsotakis was referring to the agreement made between by the three centrist parties of the European parliament, the European People’s party (EPP), the Socialists and the Liberals to back these three individuals for EU’s top jobs.

He expressed optimism that the European Council will accept these choices and highlighted the importance for the process to be completed within July.

Mitsotakis also commented on Meloni’s recent remarks against the decision of EU’s centrist parties leaders to nominate von der Leyen for President of the Commission, in what she called “backdoor deals.”

“Personally, I have great respect for Georgia Meloni, the Prime Minister of Italy. Italy is a very important country for the EU. I am confident that all these issues and any concerns will be expressed and discussed during our meeting,” he said.
