TEDDY BOYS: (From an editorial in Kathimerini) – The sick activities of a class of youths who have been keeping the police, courts and the press busy recently is not as limited a phenomenon as it might seem at first sight, nor should discussion of it be restricted to the back pages of newspapers. It is not an issue that can be solved by a single arrest or conviction, or even by shortening the trousers of these would-be criminals. On the contrary, it is an issue of major proportions that involves both the education and justice systems, as well as society as a whole. In fact, the problem should be considered within the appropriate framework of education, both within schools and outside. Naturally schools can do a great deal if they ever truly become schools. That is, a place where children not only learn to read and write but how to comport themselves. As for the state and its institutions, it could also do a great deal if the sector or organized philanthropy were expanded to include the protection and guidance of working youths. GIORGOS PAPAVASSILEIOU: – At the 17th Balkan Games in Sofia, Giorgos Papavassileiou won the 3,000 hurdles in 8 minutes, 5 seconds.
