CYPRUS ISSUE: The Greek government took significant action yesterday, in view of the effects of recent developments in the Cyprus issue, including the serious injury of the US vice consul on the island. Following a meeting between Prime Minister Constantine Karamanlis and Deputy Foreign Minister Constantine Tsatsos, Karamanlis received the ambassadors of France, Italy, Yugoslavia and Romania and the charge d’affaires of Japan, and handed them a statement regarding the threatened violation of the Lausanne Treaty by Britain and Turkey, due to the Turkish government’s acceptance of the Macmillan plan for the island, which provides for the appointment of a representative of the Turkish government to take part in governing the island. CYRUS THE GREAT: London, 17 – A major archaeological discovery has been made at the tomb of Cyrus the Great. Dr Ali Sami, the director of archaeology at Persepolis, has discovered the precise location of the actual tomb of the king who united the Medes and Persians under his rule, along with indications of Cyrus’s religious convictions. The tomb, 60 miles from Persepolis in Iran, is a huge mausoleum. Cyrus was buried there in 530 BC. When Alexander the Great visited the tomb in 327 BC, it is said that he ordered it not to be disturbed.
