PM must play his strong card

The public opinion poll published in today’s Kathimerini is a record of a topic that is being hotly debated these days. The government of New Democracy has suffered serious losses in the year since its re-election, but the prime minister continues to be seen as the party’s strongest card and the man whom the majority of citizens trust most to hold this serious office. This is why Costas Karamanlis is the only one who can make the decisions necessary to drag his administration out of the rut into which it has dug itself through the behavior of a handful of ministers and by the failure of the government’s economic policies. The prime minister is wasting his personal and political capital and, by extension, his party’s lead by covering up for behavior that, after all, does not suit his own ethos at all. And unfortunately those officials who are harming New Democracy refuse to take other people’s advice about the extent of the damage they have caused. The next few days, or even hours, will tell us whether this deadlock will continue or whether Karamanlis will decide to put the brakes on the government’s slide.
