The need to be above suspicion

For a number of years now, there have been a string of indications that members of ministers’ families are involved in business deals and other «arrangements» with state services. No one can deny the right of a spouse or some other close relative to pursue their professional interests or continue a career they have already established, provided though that they observe certain rules. First of all, there should not be even the slightest hint of preferential treatment on the part of the state body with which the family member is transacting and secondly, the minister in question should under no circumstances and in no way appear to intervene on behalf of the relative. In other countries, where it can be argued that a higher quality of political culture prevails, there are strict rules governing such behavior. In these countries it goes without saying that there is a conflict of interest in dealings between state bodies and the relatives of state officials. It is high time that these rules and this ethic were applied in Greece. For, as the saying goes, Caesar’s wife must be above suspicion…
