USA, CHINA, FORMOSA: London, 29 – The Chinese communists continued their heavy bombardment of the Quemoy and Matsu islands today and have also stepped up their psychological warfare by issuing threats over the radio and calling on those defending the islands to give themselves up. Despite the nationalists’ conviction that the communists will not risk a landing on the heavily defended islands, the Americans believe that at least for reasons of prestige Peking will feel obliged to try to seize even a few islets in the group as a means of weakening the defences of Quemoy and Matsu. Meanwhile, the nationalist government has ordered a number of administrative services in Formosa to be moved elsewhere as a safety precaution. In Washington, US President Dwight D. Eisenhower and his advisers are closely monitoring the situation. SPACE RACE: Moscow, 29: The Tass news agency has announced that two dogs that had been placed in a rocket launched on August 27, which reached a height of 450 kilometers, have returned safely to Earth. The rocket was launched from the center of the European sector of Soviet territory.
