The need for limits
Outrageous behavior and a substandard level of discourse have unfortunately characterized and colored the country’s political debate for some time now.
The exchanges in Parliament between lawmakers on Monday and Tuesday during the debate over the bill that would allow people to determine their gender identity illustrated, once again, loud and clear, that the political discourse in Greece has reached new lows.
For certain politicians, there appear to be no limits to what they say. The same also holds true for representatives of said politicians with their antics, and beyond-the-pale remarks, on social media.
The new mores and values pervading the country’s political discourse were introduced in the early years of the struggle against the Greek bailouts by politicians who now hold the reins of power.
Now the leftist-led government is facing the cost of this new low in public discourse. The constant deterioration of the political discourse is costing the country dearly and cannot continue.
