Looking for real answers
The Greek people have every right to demand answers at some point in regard to the causes of the economic crisis that has bankrupted this country. The longer we put off an objective and sober discussion on the issue and analyzing it in depth, the longer we will be providing fodder for conspiracy theories and simplistic responses that take us no further.
There are a lot of specific issues about the crisis that merit long and detailed examination, such as how the debt came about and was allowed to grow to such gigantic proportions during the years of unfettered populism, and why no national consensus was reached in time to stave off some of its worst effects.
In mature countries, such difficult and sensitive tasks are left to committees of wise men and women. Is it perhaps time that we emulated them, or have we still not learned anything from the mistakes of the past?
