No compromise on rights

Neither the European Union nor Greece should shy away from upholding human rights in the face of pressure from Turkey, which is experiencing domestic turmoil in the wake of a botched attempt to overthrow the government last week.

Everything that has been going on in Greece’s neighboring country since Friday’s failed coup suggests that it is moving towards a period of persecutions and barbarity which cannot be ignored.

In the past, some allowances and compromises were made in the name of realism and under the pressure of the refugee crisis, as thousands of migrants crossed the Aegean to Greece on a daily basis. However, if we continue along this path and fail to stand up for human rights, the message that will be sent to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is that he can continue his extreme behavior undisturbed and without any limits.
