Voting matters

The reform of the country’s electoral legislation is a process that must not be taken lightly and should be approached with caution. A simple system of proportional representation – as has been suggested – could easily throw the country into chaos, leaving it at the mercy of powerful interests. It has been implemented in other countries and the results have been catastrophic.

Reducing the percentage that a party needs to get into Parliament would also be an extremely irresponsible decision.

There are certain changes to the electoral law that can and should be made, such as breaking down the larger regions into smaller units or increasing the number of lawmakers who are picked by parties rather than voters.

The reform does not need changes that are just a matter of expediency, such as the proposal to decrease the voting age to 17 and other silly suggestions that have been heard over the past couple of weeks.
