Lesson learned?
Greece has lost valuable time and missed huge opportunities. The people’s justified anger in January brought in a government that made plenty of promises and left little but ruins. The middle classes who thought that a leftist government would lighten their tax burden have seen the opposite happen, and this in order to bankroll the appointment of cronies and to plug up the black hole in the public sector. Young people who also voted for SYRIZA saw little change in their fortunes.
After the seven tragic months that SYRIZA was in power, the majority of people have realized that they cannot leave the country’s fate in the hands of amateur magicians. They also understand how close we came to the abyss after the referendum just to test crazy anti-memorandum theories.
Everyone has had a rude awakening. Now it is up to us to elect a pro-European government that will be based on honest cooperation and capable people. There are no clear choices before us but we can certainly try to do better than last time because a second mistake would not only be destructive but possibly fatal.
