Landmark opportunities
Whichever government is elected on September 20 will face numerous challenges but also landmark opportunities.
The third bailout includes reforms – in public administration, taxation and justice – which should have taken place decades ago. We don’t need the troika to point them out and impose them. What is required is political courage and good management. The next government could also succeed in getting some much-desired debt relief soon, as well as an urgent bank recapitalization.
All of this requires a government that will not be stuck between implementing the deal signed with creditors and its own internal war, which will be staffed with the country’s best people and will focus on recovery and growth.
Reforms together with debt relief could also bring the vast majority of the country’s political powers together – irrespective of the ballot’s result.
This is the only way to put the crisis behind us.
