Consensus and its enemies

The demonization of those rallying for national consensus and possibly a coalition government is to be expected. While certain PASOK cadres do not wish to give up their positions, some New Democracy diehard officials are equally unwilling to give up their own imaginary ones. So it?s only normal that, behind the common logic dictating that there?s only one way toward the country?s rectification, both sides are spreading the word that finding consensus would only benefit vested interests and foreign powers.

What they underestimate, however, is the maturity of public opinion, which applauded the achievement of common ground on education and which in every poll appears to trust neither of the main political parties to govern alone. Raising the level of pressure for consensus are two factors which no one can disregard: public opinion?s desperation for a mature political leadership and the terrifying impasse which the country has now finds itself at.
