The right people for the job

Since Greece?s financial crisis first erupted, the government has been blatantly incapable of staffing the Finance Ministry, one of its most crucial departments, with the right people.

It is unacceptable that the country is facing the worst crisis in its postwar history and yet the prime minister has yet not appointed a permanent group of technocrats who can analyze every possible scenario and propose solutions.

No one really knows who George Papandreou?s economic policy adviser is at this moment. More infuriating, perhaps, is the fact that for the third time, the ministry agency which is responsible for collecting revenue is headed by a deputy minister who is neither a technocrat nor a financial expert.

More tough days and unprecedented circumstances lie ahead for this government. This is no time for self-serving attitudes and know-it-all arrogance.

The government must bring together its most experienced technocrats — both from inside and outside the country — in order to help steer the nation through the financial turmoil. The situation is most serious.
