Voter abstention won

Sunday’s local and regional election runoff had many would-be winners, but the one which prevailed beyond all doubt stood alone: It was abstention.

When only one in four citizens vote in the country’s largest municipality (26% voter turnout), no celebration can avoid being accompanied by concern for the causes that have made our political system as a whole so abhorrent to citizens.
