Staff must come first
The National Health System (ESY) suffers from serious staff shortages but it is not just the lack of decent salaries, but also the working conditions that are putting off doctors and nurses from working for public healthcare services.
These are public servants who should be renumerated in accordance with the contribution they make instead of being unable to afford rent in the places where they are sent to work.
Without looking after its people – many of whom choose to pursue a career abroad – ESY will never rise to European standards of service.
