Greenery takes center stage in Faliro Bay revamp
Greece’s Faliro Bay Metropolitan Park is set to become greener, more accessible, and inclusive, according to recent plans that expand on its original design. Key updates include a new elevated walkway, multi-use zones, and themed playgrounds, along with expanded seating along the waterfront, offering direct views of the Aegean Sea.
Phase two of the Faliro Bay revitalization, long delayed, is now firmly under way with financial support from the European Union. The design aligns with principles from the New European Bauhaus initiative, aimed at promoting sustainable and accessible spaces. A consortium of architecture firms, some of which have worked on this project for over two decades, has worked to create a plan that enhances community engagement and environmental resilience.
Architect Katerina Andritsou highlighted changes such as a new “transition zone” that connects the park to Athens’ urban landscape. Once just a passage, this area is transforming into a linear park with rest areas, water stations, and gradual ramps for accessibility. A continuous bike path along the Athenian Riviera will also improve connectivity for cyclists.
Other updates affect the waterfront itself. Seating facing the sea has been added to create a lively social space, while shaded areas will be expanded by increasing the park’s tree coverage, set to cover 75% of the total area.
An initially planned series of tennis courts has been reimagined as a multi-sport hub, complete with basketball courts, a beach volleyball area, and other sports facilities, catering to a wider audience.
The existing linear buildings, now housing regional offices, will undergo renovations to host indoor sports areas and cafes, while new roof spaces with seating and greenery will offer views of the sea.
Lastly, a pedestrian-only bridge will enhance connectivity within the park, while a second, hidden bridge for vehicles will reduce visual clutter, all aimed at creating a seamless urban green space for residents and visitors alike.
