Crete rattled by 4.4 magnitude quake

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.4 struck the Greek island of Crete on Monday morning, though there were no immediate reports of damage.

The Institute of Geodynamics at the National Observatory of Athens reported that the tremor occurred south-southeast of Zakros, along the island’s eastern coast, at a depth of 5.7 kilometers.

In a statement to local media, seismologist Efthymis Lekkas downplayed the significance of the event, while adding that experts are “monitoring” the situation.
