Greece faces 38 wildfires on Wednesday

The Fire Service responded to 38 wildfires across Greece on Monday. Twenty-nine of the fires were quickly contained, while efforts continue to extinguish nine others, with aerial support deployed for seven of them.

Two significant fires broke out around 5 p.m. in Kataloupo and Agalas on Zakynthos Island. Thirty firefighters, a forestry unit, 11 fire engines and volunteers are battling the blazes, supported by seven aircraft and three helicopters. Additional firefighters and equipment are being sent by ferry from Kyllini.

Other fires occurred in Kallithea, Rhodes; Martino, Fthiotida; Mesopotamos, Parga; Kourouklata, Kefalonia; and Katodio, Karpathos. All were brought under control within hours.

Investigations into the causes of the fires are underway. Authorities are urging the public to remain cautious and follow safety instructions during wildfires.
