New extension given for people to clear plots of land

With the fire season in Greece in full swing, the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection announced a third extension until July 15 for people to clear their plots of land of garbage and other flammable materials to fend off potential additional sources of blazes in the hot, dry weather.

Until Monday, 524,186 declarations had been submitted for land clearing and 3,800 citizen complaints had been lodged about fellow citizens who had not.

According to local authorities, municipalities have been given too little money too late to implement plans to help clear plots.

However, most agree that “for the first time there is such a great mobilization by the citizens,” although they are concerned about the continuous extensions that are given which make private owners “relax,” as shown by the data of the platform where the statements are filed.
