Locals fight back as greenery becomes table area

A group of residents of the municipality of Agia Paraskevi in northern Athens are expected to mount a legal challenge in administrative courts against the conversion of a green space located at the corner of Psara and Agia Triada streets into an area for placing tables and chairs.

With its appeal, the group of residents intends to file a request for suspension in order to stop the work being carried out at the site by a restaurant, which rented the space from the municipality. This plot of land was donated many years ago to the municipality by a family of residents.

It is a triangular section of green which also has a children’s playground. As it is a green area, it is forbidden to convert it into a place for tables and chairs.

However, the city council issued a new regulatory act that designated 74.5 square meters into a concession zone for tables and chairs.
