Gang bulldozes its way to cash

Four robbers used a bulldozer to stop an armored truck in the southeastern Athens neighborhood of Dafni before stealing an estimated 1.2 million euros in cash yesterday. In one of the biggest robberies of its kind, police said that the suspects used the digger to block the road that the security van was traveling along while an SUV stopped behind the vehicle so it could not reverse. The robbers then used the bulldozer’s blade to smash the armored truck’s windscreen, prompting the driver and a female guard to abandon the vehicle. Witnesses said the robbers brandished assault rifles, probably AK-47s. One witness said she was threatened at gunpoint. The robbers made off in a second SUV. Police said the gang could be the same one that used a bulldozer in an attempted robbery of another armored truck and a supermarket in Athens earlier this month without success.
