Nimetz upbeat after FM talks

United Nations mediator Matthew Nimetz emerged from talks with Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis yesterday, saying he was impressed by Athens’s «decisiveness» and that he had a «better understanding» of Greece’s positions on his proposals for ending the name dispute with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM). Nimetz and Bakoyannis met on the sidelines of a meeting of the UN General Assembly in New York to discuss the most recent suggestions that the diplomat had made on September 11. «I got the impression from the Greek side today that the Greek government is prepared to do something that would provide a solution,» said Nimetz, who suggested that no issues relating to «Macedonian ethnicity» would be discussed. He was also due to hold talks yesterday with FYROM President Branko Crvenkovski. Nimetz is due to hold talks with representatives of both sides in October to assess their positions on the proposals he has made.
