FM: Cyprus talks an opportunity

Foreign Minister George Papandreou met yesterday with the UN’s special envoy for Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, to discuss Cyprus’s reunification talks. «We believe that this is an historic moment, an historic opportunity because we will all be judged by history,» Papandreou said afterwards. He added that an opportunity existed «for permanent stability, not only for Cyprus but for relations between Greece and Turkey.» The latest round of talks between President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash began in January and were suspended on Wednesday after making little headway. They will resume on April 9. «If one considers that we are facing up to our responsibilities for such an important opportunity, I think we need the political will from all sides to contribute to solving this problem at long last,» Papandreou said.
