One step forward, a step on hold

The Council of State yesterday approved plans for a flyover at the intersection of Kifissou and Poseidonos avenues in the Faliron Delta, while the Central Archaeological Council (KAS) decided to examine claims that construction of a section of the Kifissou Avenue project would destroy part of the Long Walls which linked Athens with Piraeus in antiquity. The Council of State rejected an appeal by representatives of the Piraeus Prefectural Department and the Athens-Piraeus Prefecture against the flyover, which will lead to the Peace and Friendship Stadium and other Olympic Games venues. KAS president Lina Mendoni is reviewing claims by Council members that work on Kifissou Avenue, at the urban railway, Eleftherias bridges and Pireos Avenue intersection, should be diverted to avoid damaging a section of the Walls. Public Works Ministry representatives say the diversion will delay the project by six months.
