Iranian President Mohammed Khatami arrived in Athens for a three-day official visit yesterday. President Costis Stephanopoulos (l) welcomed him by rejecting US President George W. Bush’s description of Iran as the member of an ‘axis of evil.’ ‘Greece does not recognize the existence of such axes,’ Stephanopoulos said, adding that Iran’s contribution to the war against terrorism was ‘important.’ Khatami signed five memoranda with Prime Minister Costas Simitis for closer political, economic, cultural and educational ties, as well as an agreement concerning natural gas.
